The working principle of the starter motor
Connect the circuit
When the ignition switch is turned to the start position, the pull-in coil and hold-in coil of the electromagnetic switch are energized, generating an electromagnetic force that moves the armature.
Drive gear engagement
The armature pushes the drive gear into engagement with the engine flywheel ring gear via a fork.
Motor operation
The pull-in coil is short-circuited, the hold-in coil remains energized, maintaining the armature position, the main circuit is closed, and the motor rotates, driving the engine to start.
Disengagement after starting
After the engine starts, releasing the ignition switch de-energizes the electromagnetic switch, the armature resets, the drive gear separates from the flywheel ring gear, and the motor stops.
