Common types of starters
Classification by Control Method
Directly Operated: The starter circuit is controlled directly by foot pedals or hand levers. The structure is simple, but operation is inconvenient, and it is rarely used now.
Electromagnetically Operated: The starter circuit is controlled by an electromagnetic switch. Operation is convenient, and it is widely used in modern automobiles.
Classification by Transmission Mechanism
Inertia Engagement: The drive gear meshes with the flywheel by inertia. The structure is simple but unreliable, and it has been eliminated.
Forced Engagement: The drive gear is forced to mesh with the flywheel by electromagnetic force or manual force. The action is reliable, and it is still in use today.
Armature Shifting: Axial movement of the armature achieves engagement. It is often used in high-power diesel vehicles.
Classification by Reduction Gear
Traditional Type: The drive gear and armature rotate at the same speed; there is no reduction gear.
Reduction Type: The armature speed is reduced by a gear reduction mechanism to increase torque. This is suitable for high-power engines.
